Bhubaneswar, January 23, 2026:
Vedanta Kalinga Lancers marched into the final of the Men’s Hero Hockey India League (HIL) with a composed 2–1 victory over Ranchi Royals at the iconic Kalinga Hockey Stadium on Friday. Belgian ace Alexander Hendrickx was the star of the night, striking twice from penalty corners to hand his side a two-goal cushion before Mandeep Singh pulled one back for the Royals in a tense semi-final clash.
Ranchi Royals began the contest on the front foot, dictating early possession and moving the ball with intent to probe the Lancers’ defence. The Odisha-based side, however, absorbed the early pressure with calm assurance and gradually grew into the game. Their patience paid dividends in the 12th minute when Alexander Hendrickx coolly converted a penalty corner with a trademark drag-flick, breaking the deadlock to give the Lancers a 1–0 lead in the opening quarter.
Stung into action, Ranchi Royals pushed hard for an equaliser in the second quarter, creating six circle entries and earning four penalty corners. Despite their attacking intent, they found the Lancers’ backline unyielding. True to their reputation as the most reliable defence in the league—having conceded just eight goals so far—the Lancers stood tall to deny the Royals and carried their slender advantage into half-time.
The second half began in dream fashion for Vedanta Kalinga Lancers. Once again, it was Hendrickx who delivered the decisive blow, rifling home his second penalty-corner conversion in the 32nd minute to double his side’s lead. With a 2–0 cushion, the Lancers looked firmly in control, but Ranchi Royals refused to go down without a fight.
The Royals found a lifeline in the 40th minute through a cleverly worked penalty-corner variation. Mandeep Singh applied the finishing touch to reduce the deficit to 2–1, setting up a nervy final phase of the contest and injecting fresh belief into the Ranchi camp.
The final quarter unfolded as a thrilling end-to-end affair. With eight minutes left on the clock, the Lancers nearly sealed the deal when Rosan Kujur’s deflected effort rattled the crossbar. Ranchi Royals kept pressing relentlessly in search of an equaliser, registering seven circle entries and earning another penalty corner. However, the elusive leveller never came.
In the end, Vedanta Kalinga Lancers held their nerve under pressure, showcasing defensive discipline and tactical maturity to book their place in the HIL final with a hard-fought 2–1 victory.
Ranchi Royals will now get another shot at reaching the final when they take on Hyderabad Toofans in Qualifier 2 at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium on Sunday, January 25.
